“The Orientations of Authority” Blinds You

Project Video on Custom Shaped Screen

2018

Based on a current popular video on Japanese social media that orients the Japanese audience’s bad images of Chinese, an international couple from Japan and China utilizing the form of conversation arise the issue of the authorities from each country manipulates the public’s thought, bad images, and stereotypes to the other country. Specifically, the negative cycle of the other people from other country or culture carried by the authorities; stereotypes causes the dislikeness and behavioral disrespect to the other country people, and then it leads to the upset reactions of the other country people. Once the conflicts arise, the oriented “truth” will be utilized by the authority, social media, post online to intensify the conflicts between the countries. The piece advocates people from different countries know each other without being affected by the orientations of the authorities.

Inspired by Bill Viola’s projection mapping piece, The Veiling, the three pieces of customized screen are made of two cheesy cloth and wall. It intentionally separates the contents in different sequences. Projecting by two separate projectors, the viewers are suggested to enter the installation in any sequence as they feel to cause the different path of understanding.  The news, the social manipulations, are intensively showed on the first screen with overlapped news audio and the red tension color tone. Imitating the real-life experience of the audience who are affected by the news, the first screen leads the viewers to make the judge based on the news. The second screen gives out the perspectives that the piece discusses, and the last screen blends the manipulations of the news and the discussion of the international couple to make the viewers experience “at the moment.”

Justice for All ?

Project Video on Window Blind & Window & two ceilings, 2018

Re-performing a group experimental film made by the artist and her film crew, Biying Ding, Tatiana Villalobos, Tomokatsu Murakami. Criticizing the abuse power of the authorities in the U.S. utilize their power to imprison the minorities who are not financially affordable to defend for themselves from the crime that they are not committed to. Making the metaphor of pigeon as the woman who is being trapped by the abuse power, by breaking the common narrative timeline and presenting two paralleled objects. Artist has questioned injustice for the minorities who are innocent in the process of discrimination, violence law enforcement, trial, and incarceration.

Window blind as the material that represents the form of prison indicates and emphasizes the message of being trapped. The violence action from the authority has been emphasized by showing on the ceiling outside and inside of the room on a different scale. As the opening of the window blind, it represents the releasing of the women; however, she does not own the normal life anymore. The prisoned record that follows her forever, being unemployed, broken family, and so on. Same as the ending of the projection, the bird as the metaphor of the woman was shot by an invisible power, the abuse power from the authority.

Who Are We in The Future

Animation in Autodesk Sketchbook

2017

My audience is young people who just start their new chapter in their life. They are high school graduates who just start their brand new life in universities or work fields. My purpose is to make the young graduates get rid of the constraints of picturing everything rationally or scientifically. It is important for the young because no matter for their future researches, study, jobs, or life, they need to explore their future by developing their creativities and bold imaginations. Only with creativities, the new possibilities in study and life are achievable. As Pablo Picasso said, “every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” To do so, the young graduates need to embrace their“unrealistic” dream. Because I’m major in art, all the “unrealistic” illustrations that I have for every object; or, I would like to call it imaginations, have supported me has a creative mind about both my major and my life.

Therefore, inspired by Marisa Olson's 2018 video "Hash to the Future," “Would we recognize other intelligent life if we saw it?” I decided to make an animation that applies my curiosity and imagination of the bigger world and questioning the world that human beings might never explore or had a sense of it. The animation gives a new direction to rethink or criticize the scientific path that we are looking for the other creature. As a result, the young graduates can reflect on my animation; to question what if the unknown creature is beyond our imaginations and to accept the idea that is okay to imagine differently with the objective reality.

In the animation, I questioned if human beings can explore the bigger world imaginatively more than scientifically. To be specific, imagine the point of view that when we are seeing an ant when we are taking a hot bath. The hot water for the ant can be the “dangerous natural phenomenon to the aunt in their perception.” It could be a volcano for us. Imagine a greater space than our awareness. As a result, in the same logic, although we have all kinds of traces to see whether there is another creature that exists based on the sign of life of the limited life on the earth. Analogically, we are the fuzz on peach's skin that is observing by the other granter creature, or, we could be “the ant alongside the bathtub,” who has no idea about the other life’s existence in their own signs of life, so I illustrated it abstractly by using the interlacing images of the fuzz of peach, peach, human beings, and the earth. Eventually, after the animation, the young graduates will receive my deliverable: who we are? What other bold imaginations you have? What are the creativities you can have?

Death for the elders is not the end of life, nor a separation for aging couples who love each other; it is a new hope and expectation for the spirit of the dead living as healthier and better in heaven.

This is a  pre-experienced narrative video that made for my virtual reality project that designed for the young people to help them to understand the elders through the approaches which let them as the audiences who follow the experience of being aging suddenly. They will have an immersive perception of the character.  I have tried to let the audience to follow the experience of being aging suddenly in an immersive perception of the character. This experimental video will help me further develop an idea about the same topic virtual reality project that will help the participants feel the suffer being irreversible aging process directly.
